Even before the Indian Premier League (IPL) final was played, several reports suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was keen on adding two more teams to the lucrative tournament’s roster. Since its inception in 2008, IPL has gone from strength to strength with each passing year and has emerged as the most lucrative T20 league across the globe, so much so that several cricket boards have adjusted their annual cricket calendars accordingly.
While most of the franchises were against the idea of two more teams being added to the tournament, the BCCI is keen on inviting news bids for at least two more teams.

However, as reported by The Times of India, the Indian board has decided to keep the number of teams to 8 for the 2021 season post which fresh bids will be invited for the addition of two more teams. The BCCI has now decided that a 10-team IPL can see the light of day from the 2022 season.
The final decision will be taken at BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will take place in Ahmedabad on December 24. "The BCCI could call for the bids in February or March or April - whenever they think the time is right. The adding of new franchises, say stakeholders, will also add value to the 2021 edition once it becomes a talking point. That's the line of thought as of now," those tracking.
